I'm
getting blocked by the filter, and there's nothing bad about
the site I'm trying to get to. How can I get it
unblocked?
If
you're a teacher, send the address of the site to Bill
Herman; he'll unblock it.
If you're a student, get a teacher to vouch that the
site is "appropriate for learning in school."
Ask them to send the address to Bill Herman and request it to
be unblocked on your behalf, and he'll unblock it.
How
does Monona Grove block student access to inappropriate web
sites?
Internet
traffic to all Monona Grove computers is filtered by a
"Secure School" proxy server. Whenever
any student tries to connect to a web site outside of Monona
Grove, the Secure School filter intercepts the request and
checks the intended site against a "blackllist" of
over a million inappropriate sites. Student requests
to access sites on the Secure School "blacklist"
are rejected by Secure School.
Who
decides which sites should be filtered?
Most
of the sites on the "block list" have
been identified by Secure School as containing material that
is pornographic, or is related to gaming, gambling, or
hacking. The list is updated by Secure School every
day. In addition, Monona Grove teachers can revise the
"block list." If a teacher determines that
an unblocked site should be blocked because it is
inappropriate for learning in school, or if a teacher
determines that a blocked site should be unblocked because
it is appropriate for school, he or she can contact Bill
Herman, MG's Technology Director, to have the "block
list" revised accordingly.
